Another day, another doctor. Today we saw Radiation Oncologist Dr Wenchang Wong and his Registrar Dr Eric Fong of the Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic, Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Prince of Wales Hospital. The purpose of this consultation was two-fold: (i) to consult with the radiologists about my case, and (2) preparation of documentation for the Medical Review Committee (MRC).
Dr Wong, who is chair of the MRC, advised that the next meeting is Tuesday 10 August and that the multidisciplinary team will review my case and make recommendations for treatment. Mercifully, Dr Wong said that the team will be recommending “curative treatment”. Treatment is likely to be combination radiation therapy and chemotherapy. If the cancer I have has the right markers, they will include immunotherapy. I asked about me making day to day commitments and the doctor said that the treatments would most likely allow me to continue most of my usual activities. A lot depends on how my body reacts to the radiation and drugs. And as we know, the effects and side effects are cumulative and become more of an issue later in the course of treatment. September and October should be no problem, but from November I may become picky on eating and off alcohol (heaven forbid!).
Dr Wong booked me into the radiology clinic on Thursday 12 September to be scanned, measured, and marked up for treatment. Sounds like he is pretty confident that radiotherapy will be in the mix. Just a little concerned that he is so keen to get me into the machine.
