David and I have a small success story to share. You might recall me talking about a consult with Tegan, the dietitian, and her “food is medicine – eat to a timetable – fortify – eat protein first, then fat, carbs, veg” messages (Update 1 Oct 24). On 23 Sept I weighed 88kg and to our shock, when Tegan weighed me 1 Oct, I had already lost weight and was 84.9kg. On Monday at my pre-infusion weigh-in 14 October, I weighed at 88.9kg. That is, at the same time as undergoing 3 weeks of combined on chemoradiation treatment, (in which the general trend is for patients to lose weight), this old bloke had not lost weight, but packed on 4kg. Talk about overachievers!
After recovering from her initial amazement Tegan suggested that it was time to ease off the fortification. (Fortification is a strategy encouraged when people lose weight and need to gain weight in order to avoid reducing dosages of treatments). So it is back to normal type meals but still keeping an eye on weight. The aim now is holding a stable weight, not losing and not porking up either. hehehehe.
Credit for the success goes to David because he has been preparing most of my meals and snacks. “Time for an iced coffee, icecream, cream, and milk drink now” – “Lunchtime”- “Snack time” – “Have you drunk a chocolate, cream, and milk drink lately?” etc. His administrations worked a miracle. Wonderful.
